The Kankantri Talks
Interactive hybrid (online-offline) panel talk and performances of 2 hours in English
Rooted Across the Caribbean, connected Beyond Borders
Like the roots of the sacred Ceiba (Say-bah) tree stretching deep into the earth and across vast landscapes, Caribbean histories, cultures, and artistic practices have always extended beyond the boundaries of islands and nation-states. Embracing processes of creolization, (re-)indiginisation and marronage as the historical movements of decolonization. We imagine together, from under a Tree, how the Caribbean continues to shape global and regional artistic movements. Known as Kankantri in Suriname, the Silk Cotton Tree across much of the anglophone Caribbean, as Ceiba and Kumaka in indigenous languages of the Caribbean. This tree has long been revered by the peoples who shaped the region. For many it is the Tree of Life, connecting the underworld, the earthly realm, and the heavens, where spirits live. A liminal space, where a lack of safety was connected with a colonial reality, the Silk Cotton Tree provided for veneration redefining what safety is across space and time. Historically this tree has been used to build canoes that carried people, stories, and connections across the rivers and seas, thus nurturing movement, perhaps as a path to safety.
Inspired by this powerful symbol, RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. invites you to join this talk and performances, in a hybrid (online-offline) gathering that brings together artists, thinkers, and cultural practitioners with roots in Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, and the Netherlands. Bringing together Alakondre, Carnival, Kala Pani, and much more that shapes (pan-) Caribbean arts.

What roots, memories, and spirits continue to connect us across the Caribbean, and how do they appear within our artistic practices?
Join us as we gather beneath the symbolic canopy of the Ceiba / Kumaka / Kankantri / Silk Cotton Tree to reflect on where we come from, where we stand today, and how we might grow together into the future. Note: This is the first public event of a RAN project titled 'Nurturing Pan Caribbean Art Ecosystems' which is initiated by Fazle Shairmahomed. In 2027 and 2028 we will host international online mentorship programs for artists that (want to) create in a pan Caribbean context, a online conference, and more.
